How we work with students and graduates
1. Trusted source of information and guidance
We are known for impartial, professional, quality-assured information, advice and guidance. Our friendly, engaging staff are committed to giving the best service to students and graduates. We tailor it to their needs and make it relevant to their career stage.
2. Instant-access support
We make sure students can get in-person careers advice and information on a drop-in basis. This helps us resolve their queries when they need it. Students also have 24/7 access to digital and online careers resources. We update these regularly to reflect sector changes and trends.
3. Peer-led support
Our Student Employability Coaches provide students with relatable, accessible and immediate advice. They offer applications and employability support in the Careers Centre and in workshops.
4. Digital resources and AI
We make digital resources available to match student preferences for how and when they access content. These support students in their employability journey and include how to use AI proactively and responsibly in career research and development activities.
5. Data-informed approach
We use a range of internal and external data to shape and refine what we offer. It helps us identify students who need more support. It also helps us balance bespoke and scalable careers provision.
How we work with employers and organisations
1. Labour Market Intelligence (LMI) and emerging industry priorities
We actively gather and analyse labour market intelligence (LMI). This keeps us informed about emerging industry trends, economic shifts and future workforce needs. We use this data to anticipate and respond to employers' changing priorities. This helps make sure our students are well prepared for the graduate job market.
2. Understanding recruitment needs and trends
We engage with employers to identify their current and expected recruitment needs. We also monitor industry trends to inform our careers practice. This lets us align our resources and activities with the skills and qualifications in demand, which improves our graduates' employability.
3. Employer-focused events, careers fairs, and income generation
We organise and manage a range of employer engagement events, including careers fairs, events and panels. These events generate income for the department. They also give employers access to top talent and create valuable information and opportunities for our students.
4. Identifying gaps, sourcing opportunities and exploring funding routes
We regularly assess where there are gaps in employer engagement. We look for opportunities to collaborate, including potential funding sources. We focus on securing internships, grants and other ways to support experiential learning opportunities for our students.
5. Development and enhancement of employability skills
We work with employers to understand the main employability skills they look for. We build these insights into our resources and guidance, in line with the Employability Strategy.
How we work with academics
1. Trusted source of expertise
We work with Directors of Studies, Directors of Teaching and module convenors. We suggest suitable modules, content and timing for bringing employability into the curriculum. This includes advice on employment-authentic assessments.
2. Packaging and promoting careers and employability support
We meet with Academic Advisers, Research Supervisors and Directors of Studies. This makes sure all academics know how students can access careers support. It also makes sure they know about the full range of curriculum-adjacent employability opportunities that students can take up.
3. Link between the curriculum and employers
We use sector expertise and employer links to find suitable employer partners. They help to inform academic content and design. Our employer links and LMI also support academic departments by extending their course portfolios in response to market and industry trends.
4. Interpretation and dissemination of employability-related datasets
We analyse and interpret national and institutional employability datasets, including Career Readiness, Graduate Outcomes and NSS. We share our insights with academics. This contributes to course development and enhancement and helps students make informed choices.
5. Supporting academics with careers and employability conversations
We offer advice and expertise to Academic Research Supervisors to help prompt and guide career conversations. We provide support, resources and training for academic staff who may give students career insights and advice.
How we work with University partners
1. Employability and Placement teams
We collaborate with our Employability and Placements colleagues. We understand the complementary but distinct functions of the Careers and Placements Teams. Together, we create and communicate a clear and consistent employability journey for students.
2. Skills Centre
We develop a vision and a shared approach to delivering high-quality employability skills, within and outside of the curriculum. We make best use of our resources and work together to share expertise.
3. Students' Union
We are building a strong partnership model. We share an understanding and a commitment to consolidate where needed and change where necessary. We co-create and deliver employability provision for student leaders.
4. Student Support and Safeguarding
We share professional knowledge, insights and expertise. We work within appropriate boundaries and referral processes. We develop joint approaches and provision where needed.
5. Advancement
We identify where our strategies align and find opportunities for alumni to engage, inspire and develop our students. We cultivate and make the most of alumni networks.
