Description: Aims:
To acquaint students with recent developments in Russian cinema, from the post-war period to the present day. To provide an overview of the cultural and political background to these developments. To conduct advanced analysis of film as text, examining some key films of the period.

Learning Outcomes:
Students who complete the unit successfully will be able to demonstrate that they:
* are familiar with the main developments in Russian cinema since 1945;
* are familiar with key issues in the academic study of Russian film;
* are able to conduct a sophisticated and critical analysis of chosen films.

Skills:
Skills in critical analysis, conceptual thinking, precision in the use of written and spoken language, exercise of independent judgement, reasoned argument and the planning/conduct/reporting of non-quantitative research are developed and assessed in this unit. Language skills are developed in this unit.

Content:
A brief history of Soviet film 1917-1945; some critical tendencies in the 'thaw' and 'stagnation' years; Gorbachev's policy of glasnost' in the arts; the 'unshelving' of previously banned films in the late 1980s; the end of Soviet film and the emergence of the 'new' Russian cinema post-1991.
