Description: Aims:
This unit covers the functionalities of Excel spreadsheet software including data analysis tools like the statistical testing tools and the optimisation solver. The programming language (VBA) embedded within Excel is also explored in depth and the issues of code efficiency and web integration are analysed.

Learning Outcomes:
At the end of this unit, students will be able to:
* Design spreadsheets to solve business problems, the capabilities of which can be extended to the needs of the user
* Use statistical testing tools and the optimisation solver to provide business decision support
* Use the object model of Excel to access data contained internally as well as externally and implement algorithms to process it

Skills:
Intellectual skills:
* Model business processes using spreadsheets and identify possible improvements (T, F, A)
* Generate multiple business scenarios and test them statistically (T, F, A)
Practical skills:
* Practical knowledge of the high level capabilities of Excel (T, F, A)
* Integration of data sources and design of efficient algorithms (T, F, A)
Transferable skills:
* Advanced use of information technology (F)
* Extended knowledge of data types, their storage, and conversion (T, F)

Content:
Topics covered include basic and advanced spreadsheet functions, data validation, charts, pivot tables, using statistical testing facilities in spreadsheets, applying optimisation principles in Excel, conducting what-if analysis, introduction to VBA programming, conditional statements, loops, user-defined functions and creating usable applications.
