Requisites:
Description: Aims:

* To appreciate the importance of materials in engineering design
* To review the broad spectrum of engineering materials in terms of properties such as strength, stiffness, toughness, thermal conductivity, electrical conductivity, embodied energy and CO2 footprint.
* To characterise and compare the properties of these materials.
* To present case studies which examine the selection and application of materials in engineering design applications.

Learning Outcomes:
After successfully completing this unit the student will be able to:
* describe various types of engineering materials
* describe the overall process of engineering design, and the place in it of materials selection;
* deduce from standard test results the materials information required for design
* analyse materials requirements and propose solutions to the selection problem in specified design situations.

Skills:
Facilitated - intellectual, and analytical.
Key skills: presentation skills, report writing skills.

Content:

* Introduction to engineering materials and their use in the design process
* Design aspects of material properties: Stress and strain, elasticity and viscoelasticity; time, temperature and frequency dependent responses; optical, thermal and electrical properties;
* The materials spectrum: materials resources, classification in terms of mechanical, thermal and electrical properties
* Formalised procedures for materials selection and the limits of such procedures
* Case studies on selected products and materials.
