Requisites:
Description: Aims:
To introduce students to the key elements of analogue and mixed signal circuit design. These will cover the essential design elements of interfacing to the real world via sensors, amplifiers and filters, noise and EMC analysis, data converters, clock generation and oscillators and power supplies.

Learning Outcomes:
After successfully completing this unit the student will be able to:
Understand, design and critically appraise analogue and mixed signal circuits.
Demonstrate detailed knowledge of operational amplifier based sensor circuits using instrumentation amplifiers, transimpedance and transconductance topologies.
Demonstrate critical understanding of the role of noise figure in analogue and mixed signal circuit design.
Demonstrate detailed knowledge of stability of amplifiers under feedback conditions.
Demonstrate detailed knowledge of analogue to digital converter circuits using successive approximation or oversampling techniques.
Demonstrate ability to critically evaluate information and design a switching power supply, looking at alternative topologies, understanding the differences between topologies and design techniques to be employed.
Demonstrate the ability to use appropriate circuit simulation and design tools.

Skills:

Use appropriate professional simulation and design tools (TFA).
Employ a range of established and new techniques to review and critically analyse information concerning engineering problems, and to propose and implement solutions in a professional manner (TFA).

Content:
Amplifier design: Fundamentals of designing amplifier circuits including gain, bandwidth, feedback, stability, compensation and performance.
Noise analysis: Fundamentals of noise modelling, implementing noise in circuit design, techniques for noise mitigation, system noise analysis.
Data converter design: Specification analysis, topologies including Flash, successive approximation and sigma-delta, quantization, sampling, distortion, effective number of bits.
Power supply design: Linear and switching power supplies, efficiency, AC/DC rectification, DC/DC conversion.
Filter design: Key topologies, design techniques, practical issues, optimization.
