Description: Aims:

* To introduce students to the principles and practices involved in selected areas of transport phenomena,
* To advance students' understanding of the principles of 3D, complex single phase flow, and
* To introduce students to the principles and applications of multiphase flows.

Learning Outcomes:
After successfully completing this unit the student should be able to:
* describe a wide variety of non-Newtonian behaviour and carry out basic calculations;
* carry out simple calculations with the Navier-Stokes equations;
* describe the theory of turbulent flow and carry out basic calculations;
* describe the complexities of two-phase gas-liquid flow
* describe a variety of oil production techniques;
* describe the use of Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) in transport phenomena problems.

* Analyse and solve problems (T, F, A)
* Critically analyse information and construct logical arguments (T, F, A)

Content:

* Non-Newtonian fluids including Power-Law and Bingham fluids;
* Derivation and application of the Navier-Stokes Equations, Energy and Species Transport equations;
* Turbulent flow models and Universal Velocity Profiles;
* Two-phase gas-liquid flow in channels: theory and applications: two-phase flow patterns; void fractions; determination of pressure drop; Taylor flow; Lockhart-Martinelli correlation; and industrial applications.
* Oil production covering the basics of primary, secondary and tertiary recovery processes.
* An introduction to the challenges of using commercial CFD codes to model real systems.
