Description: Aims:
To teach the students the pathways of central metabolism and to relate the regulation of these pathways to the homeostasis of the whole organism.

Learning Outcomes:
After taking this course the student should be able to:
* describe the pathways of central metabolism;
* explain the way in which the cell degrades nutrients in small steps to allow the energy to be trapped and converted to a useful form;
* explain the way in which central metabolism connects catabolism and anabolism;
* explain the regulation of central metabolism with respect to the needs of the organism in relation to its environment.

Skills:
Learning and studying T/F/A, Written communication T/F/A, Numeracy & computation T/F/A, Information technology T/F, Problem solving T/F, Information handling & retrieval T/F/A, Working independently T/F, Career preparation T/F.

Content:
Proteins: amino acids - structures, ionisation and physical properties; primary structure and an overview of protein folding and conformation. Enzymes: catalysis, kinetics, regulation. Metabolism: thermodynamics of reactions, chemistry of monosaccharides, glycolysis, gluconeogenesis, citric acid cycle, glyoxylate cycle, regulation of central metabolism.
While taking this unit you must take BB10001.
NB. You must have A level Chemistry (or equivalent) to take this unit.
